Each year student volunteers provide essential support to the IEEE VIS Conference. The conference depends on student volunteers to staff the various conference events and special purpose conference rooms. Their enthusiastic participation enhances the conference experience for all the attendees.
Student Volunteers benefit by observing first-hand the latest advances in visualization, hearing and meeting world-class as well as next-generation visualization professionals from around the world, and building a network of research colleagues.
The Student Volunteer Program is looking for reliable, hard working and enthusiastic student volunteers to help us create a great experience and a premier conference.
APPLICATION SYSTEMThe SV application system will be open from July 1 to August 1. SVs will be selected using the criteria outlined HERE. The first round selected SVs will be emailed on August 25. All other applicants will be placed on a waiting list.
Apply HERE between July 1 and August 1.
QUALIFICATIONSApplicants must be enrolled as full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students during VIS 2015. We may request proof of enrollment be provided. Post-Docs will not be considered.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER DUTIESA description of common student volunteer tasks is located HERE. Requests to perform certain tasks are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis, with limits to the number of hours any volunteer may devote to certain types of tasks. See sample schedules from previous years: 1, 2, and 3. Volunteers will be notified when the task request system will open.
Volunteers will work approximately 22 hours during the conference. Some volunteers have found this difficult to manage at conferences in which they also have to present while others have appreciated have the student volunteer office nearby to stop in and work on their slides.
VOLUNTEER BENEFITSIn exchange for approximately 22 hours of work, student volunteers will receive many benefits:
- Discounted IEEE VIS registration.
- Tickets to receptions.
- A volunteer Thank-You Party.
- A majority of your accommodation costs at a student volunteers hotel selected by the conference committee.
Note: A fee of approximately 130 USD will be charged for registration. Depending on hotel costs, volunteers will be required to settle additional fees at the end of the conference. We estimate this will be approximately 200 USD.
CONFERENCE REGISTRATIONThe registration period for student volunteers will be held one or two weeks after the notification of acceptance. A fee of approximately 130 USD is expected to be charged at the moment of registration. The actual costs associated with hotel arrangements will be calculated at the end of the conference. Though these costs are subsidized, those staying in the volunteer block will need to settle a portion. We estimate this will be approximately 200 USD.
STUDENT VOLUNTEER'S HOTELThe student volunteer's hotel is usually selected by the conference committee and it is located a few blocks from the conference venue. Student volunteers are free to make different accommodation arrangements. However, the student volunteer's hotel generally offers a significant discount from the standard hotel rates.
