13 - 18 OCTOBER 2013, ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA

Student Volunteers

Each year student volunteers provide essential support to the IEEE VIS Conference. The conference depends on student volunteers to staff the various conference events and special purpose conference rooms. Their enthusiastic participation enhances the conference experience for all the attendees.

Student Volunteers benefit by observing first-hand the latest advances in visualization, hearing and meeting world-class as well as next-generation visualization professionals from around the world, and building a network of research colleagues.

The Student Volunteer Program is looking for reliable, hard working and enthusiastic student volunteers to help us create a great experience and a premier conference.

APPLICATION SYSTEM AND IMPORTANT DATES

The SV application system is accesible HERE and it will be open from July 1 to August 1. The first draft of accepted applicants will be notified via email on August 15 and all other applicants will be placed on a waiting list.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be enrolled as full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students during the 2013 academic year. Selected applications will be requested to provide proof of enrollment.

SELECTION GUIDELINES

Every year the conference receives a lot of worthy student volunteer applications, but the number of positions available is limited. The following considerations will influence selections:
  • Selection for presentation at IEEE SciVis Conference, IEEE InfoVis Conference, IEEE VAST Conference, LDAV Symposium, Biovis Symposium, or Doctoral colloquium.
  • Success as student volunteer at previous IEEE VIS or other conferences.
  • Preference is given to PhD, then masters, then undergraduate students though we encourage everyone to apply.
  • The number of volunteers from each institution/research group may be limited to ensure broad participation.
CONFERENCE REGISTRATION

The registration period for student volunteers will be held one or two weeks after the notification of acceptance. A fee of approximately $110 USD is expected to be charged at the moment of registration. The fee goes towards the hotel charges for the students that stay at the student volunteer's hotel. For individuals that have other hotel arrangements, the fee will be refunded after IEEE VIS 2013 has ended.

APPLICATION EXPENSES

In exchange for approximately 22 hours of work, student volunteers will receive many benefits:
  • Free IEEE VIS registration.
  • Tickets to receptions.
  • A volunteer Thank-You Party.
  • A majority of your accommodation costs at a student volunteers hotel selected by the conference committee.
Note: A fee of approximately $110 USD will be charged (as explained above).

STUDENT VOLUNTEER'S HOTEL

The student volunteer's hotel is usually selected by the conference committee and it is located a few blocks from the conference venue. Student volunteers are free to make different accommodation arrangements. However, the student volunteer's hotel generally offers a significant discount from the standard hotel rates.
